GST Explained

Understanding GST for Sellers

Everything an Indian e-commerce seller needs to invoice with the right tax.

What is GST and how is it calculated?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax charged on the supply of goods and services. To add GST, you multiply the base price by the applicable rate and add it back — so ₹1,000 at 18% becomes ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180.

Every invoice you raise as a registered seller must show the correct GST amount and rate. Getting it right keeps your GSTR filings clean and prevents tax collected from eating into your margins.

CGST, SGST & IGST — how the tax is split

For a sale within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into CGST (collected by the Centre) and SGST (collected by the State) — an 18% rate becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For a sale between two different states (inter-state), the full rate is charged as a single IGST.

This calculator detects your supply type and shows the exact CGST/SGST or IGST breakdown, so your invoice matches what the GST portal expects.

Add GST vs Remove GST (reverse GST)

Sometimes your marketplace price already includes GST and you need to work backwards to find the base value — this is called reverse or GST-inclusive calculation. The formula is Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100).

For example, a ₹1,180 MRP that includes 18% GST has a base of ₹1,000 and ₹180 of tax. Use the 'Remove GST' mode above to extract the base and tax from any inclusive price instantly.

Worked example — ₹1,000 at 18% GST

Add GST
Base amount₹1,000.00
GST (18%)₹180.00
Total₹1,180.00

18% added on the base amount

Remove GST
Base amount₹847.46
GST (18%)₹152.54
Total₹1,000.00

18% extracted from an inclusive price

Use the 'Remove GST' mode. The formula is: Base = Total ÷ (1 + GST%/100). For example, ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST gives a base of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. This is also called reverse GST calculation.
For a sale within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) — e.g. 18% becomes 9% + 9%. For a sale between different states (inter-state), the full rate is charged as IGST.
